Spent our Pre-Fourth of July weekend at Brainerd for the Mid Summer Classic race weekend that combines both our local SCCA club and our local vintage club (VSCR). This was my first time racing at BIR (I've been coming here and photographing here for over 20 years!) and it was also my dad's first race weekend since he broke his ribs in May. This weekend is always combined with drag races (they run on the strip on the Donnybrooke Course while cars race on the Comp Course) so there are a lot of people! Also, we were hit with a massive thunderstorm on Friday night - I'm talking about when you look at a radar and you see red over your city... we were completely covered in purple! There were lightning strikes to the ground, hail, wind that rocked everyone's trailers and buckets of rain. So the track was preeeetty wet on Saturday when the first groups went out, but everyone managed!
Both Saturday and Sunday follow the same format: warm up, qualifying, qualifying races, and a feature race for each group. My dad raced before me in the Vintage group (he brought home a 4th on Saturday and 2nd on Sunday) and I raced last in my SCCA group (managing to bring home a 1st place on Saturday and 1st place on Sunday). Learning this track was fun since I've been photographing here for awhile! It was a little intimidating to be thrown out on a wet track Saturday morning with every SCCA closed wheel car especially since I was trying to learn the track - but it was a great weekend overall and I crossed another new-to-me track off the list!
